My name is Shirlee Sturm
I am the school counselor for Vernon Middle School's 5th and 6th graders.  I am here to help students, aid parents, and assist teachers. You may contact my office 337.239.9688.
VMS Agenda
Each student is given a school agenda.  This spiral calendar has a lot of information about our school in it.  We encourage all students to use their agenda to write their daily homework assignments down and record test dates. This helps them to remember their homework and test dates and be better prepared for class daily. The agenda is also a great source for parents and teachers to communicate.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
We encourage parent/teacher conferences.  You can meet with your child's teacher during regularly scheduled P/T conference dates or schedule a special meeting during your child's teacher's planning time.
SBLC Meetings
School Building Level Committee meetings are convened with teachers, parents, counselor, administrator, and student. These meetings are to assess student's progress and/or needs or concerns.  If your child is having difficulty with his/her behavior or grades at school, the first contact is the classroom teacher.  However, you are welcome to contact me to schedule an SBLC meeting with your child's teacher if difficulties continue.  Working together, we can help your child understand how to make good choices and/or devise good study habits.
Special Education/504
If your child has an evaluation or special education plan from a previous school, please make me aware so we can provide services to help meet your child's special needs.  IEP/504 meetings are convened at least annually to review and/or rewrite the plans with goals, objectives, and accomodations.
School Attendance
School attendance is very important.  Please contact us if there are extenuating circumstances that will require that your child miss school.  Vernon Parish adopted a new attendance policy for any student accumulating more than 8 days of unexcused or temporary excused absences in a semester.  Students will receive a non-attendance "F" on their progress report or report card until they attend Saturday school for makeup.
Grading Policy (Vernon Middle School/Vernon Parish)

To be promoted, students must make a passing grade average in Language Arts and math and in at least one other major subject (science or social studies).  To receive a passing grade, students must earn a minimum or six (6) quality points per year with at least three (3) quality points earned in the second semester.

You can access  your child's grades on the Parents Communication Center at the Vernon Parish Web site.
